Mentorship

25 Apr

Many times people ask me how I manage to keep up with my life as a wife to a very dynamic man of God, mother of two kids 5 and 6, working partime at a secular job and volunteering the other part of my life in youth ministry and other church activities.

First of all Having my personal devotion unto God is my main priority to keep me refreshed spiritually, mentally and eventually if the soul is healthy…. physically it will be evident ;-).

4 I sought the Lord, and He heard me, And delivered me from all my fears. Psalm 34:4 (NKJV)

However another area that I would like to talk about which has been a great blessing  is the part of having a mentor in life. As a young believer I was discipled to become strong and stable in my faith as a believer. As I grew older in the Lord I Learned to keep on growing, but then I got married after a while the kids followed and I realized that I needed someone in my life who already walked the road of marriage and raising up kids while being involved in ministry.

According to the dictionary the word mentor is described as following:

Mentorship is a personal developmental relationship in which a more experienced or more knowledgeable person helps to guide a less experienced or less knowledgeable person. However, true mentoring is more than just answering occasional questions or providing ad hoc help. It is about an ongoing relationship of learning, dialog, and challenge.

“Mentoring” is a process that always involves communication and is relationship based, but its precise definition is elusive.

Mentoring is a process for the informal transmission of knowledge, and the psychosocial support perceived by the recipient as relevant to work, career, or professional development; mentoring entails informal communication, usually face-to-face and during a sustained period of time, between a person who is perceived to have greater relevant knowledge, wisdom, or experience (the mentor) and a person who is perceived to have less (the protégé)”.

I realised why trying to do it on my own, while God placed me in the body of Christ to learn from those who went before me in good exampleship.

Older women likewise are to be… teaching what is good, so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored” (Titus 2:3-5).

So for me a mentor is someone who I can watch from a distance and learn by exampleship of that person’s lifestyle.

The thing I love about mentorship is that it is that true mentoring is more than just answering occasional questions or providing ad hoc help. It is about an ongoing relationship of learning, dialog, and challenge.

So when Im overwhelmed by life, marriage, my kids, ministry, personal insecurities or when facing new challenges, from time to time I just take a long walk or talk with my mentor.

So do you have anything you like to share or ask about having a mentor or being a mentor, feel free to drop a line in the comment box!
